RDW: Your Essential Government Agency as a Taxi Driver

The RDW (Rijksdienst voor het Wegverkeer) handles everything related to licence plates, vehicle inspections and driving licences in the Netherlands. For taxi drivers, the RDW is indispensable: from the P-number to the blue licence plate and government pass.

What is the RDW?

The RDW (Rijksdienst voor het Wegverkeer — Netherlands Vehicle Authority) is the Dutch government agency responsible for vehicles and driving licences. The RDW manages the national vehicle registration system, approves vehicles and issues driving licences and special registrations. For taxi drivers, the RDW is indispensable on multiple fronts.

What Does the RDW Handle for Taxi Drivers?

1. P-Number (Personal Passenger Transport Registration)

The P-number is your personal identification number as a taxi driver and is mandatory for paid passenger transport. Apply via rdw.nl with the following documents:

  • Valid category B driving licence (minimum)
  • Certificate of Good Conduct (VOG)
  • Medical declaration of fitness to drive
  • Minimum age 21

2. Blue Licence Plate

The blue licence plate — mandatory for all taxis — is applied for through the RDW. You need a valid taxi operator licence (ILT) for this. After approval, the RDW registers the vehicle as a taxi and the blue plates are issued.

3. Government Pass for the Onboard Computer

The government pass (rijkspas) is a smart card you use to log into the Taxi Onboard Computer (BCT). The RDW issues the government pass after your P-number application is approved. If you lose your pass, apply for a replacement via rdw.nl.

4. Vehicle Inspections (MOT)

The RDW sets the MOT requirements for taxis, which are stricter than for private cars. Via rdw.nl you can look up vehicle details, check your MOT expiry date and find a nearby approved inspection station.

5. Zero-Emission Zone Exemptions

Exemptions for zero-emission zones are applied for via the RDW. Once approved, the RDW registers the exemption to the licence plate so that automatic cameras recognise the vehicle.

Useful Tools on RDW.nl

  • Licence plate check: Look up vehicle details by licence plate
  • MOT check: Check when your vehicle is due for inspection
  • ZE zone access check: Verify whether your licence plate has access to zero-emission zones
