Kiwa Register: Technical Inspections for Taxis and Taxi Companies
Kiwa Register is the designated inspection body for technical inspections of taxis in the Netherlands. From taximeter checks to vehicle inspections: Kiwa ensures your taxi meets all legal requirements.
What Does Kiwa Register Do for the Taxi Sector?
Kiwa Register is one of the designated inspection bodies in the Netherlands for the taxi industry. It carries out legally required inspections of taxis and their equipment. Without valid inspection certificates, a taxi may not be used for paid transport.
Which Inspections Does Kiwa Carry Out?
1. Taximeter Inspection
The taximeter — the measuring instrument that calculates the fare — must be periodically checked for accuracy. This is a legal requirement. Kiwa verifies whether the meter calculates correctly and complies with the current maximum fares.
- Mandatory inspection upon first use
- After every fare change (e.g. on 1 January 2026)
- After repair or replacement of the meter
2. BCT Certification
The Taxi Onboard Computer (BCT) must be approved by a designated body such as Kiwa. Kiwa verifies whether the system meets the technical requirements of the RDW and the ILT.
3. Vehicle Inspection (Enhanced MOT)
Stricter MOT requirements apply to taxis than to private cars. Kiwa carries out enhanced inspections that also assess passenger safety, equipment and the vehicle's identification as a taxi.
How to Book an Inspection
Book inspections via the taxi product page on the Kiwa website: kiwaregister.nl/productpagina-taxi. You can also call to make an appointment at the nearest Kiwa inspection station.
Cost of Inspections
Costs vary by inspection type. A taximeter inspection costs on average €50–€90 (excluding VAT). Vehicle inspection costs depend on the vehicle type and complexity of the assessment.
