What is CROW?
CROW is the national knowledge platform for infrastructure, public space, traffic and transport in the Netherlands. CROW develops guidelines, handbooks and publications used by municipalities, provinces and transport companies for road design, parking facilities and transport policy.
How Does CROW Affect the Taxi Industry?
Taxi Ranks
CROW publishes guidelines for the design of taxi ranks in cities. Municipalities creating new ranks or redesigning existing ones use CROW standards for dimensions, markings, traffic flow and road safety. As a taxi driver or operator, you benefit indirectly from well-designed taxi stands.
Charging Infrastructure for Electric Taxis
With the transition to electric vehicles, charging points play a central role. CROW has developed guidelines for the placement and design of charging stations at public and semi-public locations, including taxi ranks and airports.
Zero-Emission Zones
When implementing zero-emission zones, municipalities use CROW guidelines for road signs, markings and traffic management. The uniform road sign that became mandatory from 1 January 2026 was partly developed using CROW standards.
Sustainable Mobility
CROW also publishes on the broader transition to sustainable mobility: shared mobility, mobility-as-a-service and the integration of taxi services into public transport networks.
